The institute operates across borders geographically, institutionally, and culturally understanding that Latin American art does not stop at any single frontier. As a nomadic institution without fixed walls, it works within in-between spaces through residencies, exhibitions, publications, and encounters. Its practice is grounded in collaboration, establishing alliances with artists, curators, institutions, and cultural agents as a central condition of its work. At the same time, it is driven by a critical approach in which research and curatorial practice engage with questions of visibility, power, and the conditions under which art is produced and circulates.
Latin American contemporary art occupies an uneven position within global art circuits. Despite its richness and complexity, access to European exhibition, research, and institutional spaces remains structurally limited.
LATAM MAFIA was founded in Berlin in 2026 to address this gap not as a gateway that filters or represents, but as a platform that creates autonomous conditions for production, study, and circulation.
The name itself operates as a provocation: an ironic reclamation of the outsider, the informal, and the non-European, asserting a position that does not seek to adapt to dominant institutional codes in order to become legible.
